I meant to blog about this book months ago, but things have been hectic on my side as I try to build the ChooseYour brand. I have launched two of the 20 sites I will be building in the next few months. I very much recommend this latest book by Gary Vaynerchuck. The audiobook has some extra features and contain some more information, also it is read by the author himself, who lacks no enthusiasm! A great book to listen to while you’re either driving back and forth to work or doing your morning exercise.

I Pray some fearful powers that holds me back at times

won’t suffice stopping what my eyes so eagerly yearn seeing

That the near death of beliefs I’ve so dearly cuddled

won’t suffocate and blind, killing the innocence of the clear tomorrow I so undoubtedly envision

For I know there is one half of me that is what I cry at the pick of day

Yet there is another half that is in complete self-composure

Beg, oh I beg that the music I hear from a distance

Be ever so beautiful even if the words yet painful

Long, yet even more, the woman I love is forever loved

that even distance would strengthen and not distort our affection

For I know there is one half of me is always saying goodbyes

Yet there is another half that is wishing no loss

Wishing that the words I speak

Be heard not as prayers and petitions I scatter to the wind at times

…simply respected

Or else what is it left to a man flooded with real feelings?

For I know there is one half of me that is what my ears have heard in the street corners and boulevards

Yet, there is another half that is quiet and silent

The one half of me is always willing to go, yet another half is wishing the calm and peace I know we both deserve

I pray, oh I pray the tension that erodes inside us be rewarded somehow… one day, perhaps

Because one half of me is what I’m thinking, whilst the other half is like a volcano erupting. Wishing that the fear of one half loneliness finally goes away, and that the living with myself becomes at least bearable.

I pray yet more that the mirror reflect in my face the sweet smile I remember having while yet a boy

And why is it that one half of me is the memory of what I once was, while the other half is full of ideas made up in my mind?

Wishing that simple joy be the gate to quiet my tumultuous spirit

Wishing your silence speaks to me as it refreshes the other half

Because there is one half of me that is always a shelter and charity

Yet, there is another half that is exhausted and hungry

May our both halves flourish – may it flourish with simplicity

And that my madness may one day be forgiven

Because one half of me is love, yet the other I’ve come find to be love also

For the past few months now, I have been working quite hard in my tinny office, hidden away from noise and …people! Together with a couple of friends we’ve been setting up a tool to help jobseeker and recruiters alike to find each other. Watch the Space!

I was watching the news the other day and feeling quite depressed by the figures on unemployment, even the current financial figures aren’t really all that bad.

I think, however, that the latest figures on unemployment will be slightly improved in the next few months and is my hope the growth continue full steam ahead! Although there are still 2.65 million unemployed in the UK this is down by 35,000 according to the latest figures.

It might only be a small change but there is already some hope and with the number of jobs available starting to increase again jobseekers are starting to find more opportunities. If you are unemployed or looking for a new job I advise you to keep your options open and maybe consider part-time work if it helps you get on to the career ladder.

Like I mentioned, we will be launching a new job board tool to help jobseekers and recruiters to find each other. At the launch of this new website, jobseekers will be able to search and apply to over 50,000 live jobs. Full access will be given for recruiters to upload their latest vacancies in all sectors across the UK and abroad.

A full post will come soon with more on this and a link for new accounts!

Meanwhile, if you are looking for a job or want to advertise a position, please feel free to use one of our partners:

And here I am finding myself failing yet again, I am failing forward and that’s ok. I see I’m moving forward but that off course has always to involve some failures also. It has become so much part of me that I keep on saying that as long as I’m failing forward that’s not a bad thing! I read a book not long ago that tells a great story in regards to failures and successes and I would like to share it here.

Two working artists David Bayles and Ted Orland, wrote a book called, Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking, in this book they tell us a story about an art teacher who did an experiment with his grading system for two groups of students. It is a parable on the benefits of failure. And here is what happened:

The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the “quantity” group: fifty pounds of pots rated an “A,” forty pounds a “B,” and so on. Those being graded on “quality,” hoever, needed to produce only one pot – albeit a perfect one – to get an “A.” Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of the highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the “quantity” group was busily churning out piles of work – and learning from their mistakes – the “quality” group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.

So, it doesn’t matter whether your objectives are in the area of art, business, ministry, sports, or relationships. The only way you can get ahead is to fail early, fail often, and fail forward.

Note this post was contributed to the blog by Paul La Rosa. I met Paul La Rosa when he was referred to me by friend and fellow blogger Betty Ming Liu. Paul’s story of growing up in the projects of New York City and climbing up the ranks starting as a copy boy at the New York Daily Newsreally struck a chord with me. I am a year or two older than Paul, and grew up a few miles away. His book is coming out today, and I asked him to tell the story of how it came to be. Here’s his report.
For my first four books—all about criminal investigations that were based on hours I produced for the CBS News broadcast “48 Hours Mystery”—I chose to publish with two of the Big 6 publishers—Penguin and Simon & Schuster. But for my new book—the memoir Leaving Story Avenue: My journey from the projects to the front page, which is being released this week—I wanted a publisher to care about this personal work as much as I did.

Enter the world of independent publishing. It’s different, that’s for sure but, so far, the experience is more enjoyable. I’ve had a lot of input into cover design, layout and getting blurbs that, yes, appeared on the cover.

My partner in this venture—and I call this house my partner because that’s how I feel—is Park Slope Publishing, a new independent based in Brooklyn which calls itself an “environmentally friendly and green publisher.” That means it uses print on demand technology and e-books.

That also means not doing a print run of thousands of books but, in this age of e-books, I’m okay with that. Park Slope publishes the number of trade paperbacks readers want and we all save a few trees in the process.

One thing I knew at the start was that I wanted the books that were published to be in the trade paperback format. To me, mass market paperbacks look too cheap and hard cover books are anachronistic. Personal preference, but that’s how I feel. The publisher readily agreed to go that way.

We came up with three different designs for the cover (using the services of Joel Friedlander, aka The Book Designer) and settled on what we felt was the best.

Taking Over the Blurb Project

One thing that I really wanted was good cover blurbs. With the big publishers, I never had the chance to get the blurbs on the cover as I wanted; this time I wasn’t going to be denied, especially since I felt that, with such a personal work as a memoir, I needed to quote someone who would be impressive.

I put out a lot of feelers. Some people that I felt sure would come through did not but I was overwhelmed with gratitude when the well-known author Ken Auletta of The New Yorker magazine came through big-time with a very generous blurb. It was all the more exciting because he’d warned me up front that he would read the book but not promise a blurb unless he enjoyed it. Thankfully, he did, saying, “Paul LaRosa has written a poignant and funny memoir that reads … as breezily as a delicious tabloid newspaper.”

We put that blurb on the front cover. You can read his entire quote on the back cover and you can be sure, dear reader, it is totally genuine. Ken had no reason to help me out on this one but he really enjoyed the book.

Another happy surprise was Theresa Weir, the best-selling author of her own memoir The Orchard, which was picked as one of Oprah Winfrey’s best books of 2010. I loved it too, and found Ms. Weir on Twitter. Would she be interested in reading my memoir? She said yes and, within weeks, I had my second generous cover blurb. Both were from highly reputable authors.

Working with a small house, it was easy to change the cover design a bit to get the blurbs included.

Moving on to Marketing

The next issue was marketing. Those not familiar with publishing should understand that, even if you’re published by a Big 6 publisher, there is almost no marketing or advertising done for you as an unknown author. The best you can hope for is a couple of radio interviews and perhaps a bookstore reading or two. No advertising. The rest is up to you.

It’s counter-intuitive but the Big 6 publishers put all their advertising and marketing muscle behind brand name authors who need their help the least. Do you really have to push John Grisham’s new book? With his advertising budget, you could help a dozen unknown authors. It doesn’t make sense to me but that’s just the reality of modern publishing.

For my new book … I wanted a publisher to care about this personal work as much as I did.

Anyway, marketing is something I’m comfortable with, having done it for my four previous books. We drew up a press release and sent out advance copies to anyone we could think of. Again, the book received such nice reviews that I’m almost embarrassed. One reviewer compared me to a poet, another to a painter. It was heartening and we had even more good buzz to help us.

We also both used social media—Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and our own websites—as much as possible. I’m very comfortable with social media and began to spread the word, ramping up as we got closer to the publication date (April 18, 2012).

Next Stop: Distribution

The biggest hurdle was distribution. The best thing the Big 6 publishers do is get the books into bookstores but, even then, unless you’re well-known or your book catches lightening in a bottle, the bookstores will carry maybe five copies and put you on shelves that you’d need a GPS system to find.

We figured that these days, many if not most people are used to buying their books online and we took out Facebook, Google and Goodreads ads. I did try to talk my way into some local Brooklyn bookstores with mixed results. Believe it or not, the best luck I had was with a Barnes & Noble store in my neighborhood. We’re still waiting on the small independent bookstores to get back to us.

Using social media and press contacts, we were successful in getting online reviews, great blurbs, at least six radio interviews (including one on NPR), two television interviews and we’re still hoping for more.

It’s been a fun experience so far and I’m guaranteed a much bigger royalty share than I would have had with a Big 6 publisher. And you can help out—buy a book! As they say on Facebook and Twitter, .

It is a glorious thing to read both Henry Lawson and AB ‘Banjo’ Patterson together. In my opinion, their world is a harmonious one. They manage to balance each other and between the two of them they capture a time and a spirit, and this world is preserved forever and ever. I almost feel like saying, amen.

THE THINGS WE DARE NOT TELL
Henry Lawson

The fields are fair in autumn yet, and the sun’s still shining there,
But we bow our heads and we brood and fret, because of the masks we wear;
Or we nod and smile the social while, and we say we’re doing well,
But we break our hearts, oh, we break our hearts! for the things we must not tell.

There’s the old love wronged ere the new was won, there’s the light of long ago;
There’s the cruel lie that we suffer for, and the public must not know.
So we go through life with a ghastly mask, and we’re doing fairly well,
While they break our hearts, oh, they kill our hearts! do the things we must not tell.

We see but pride in a selfish breast, while a heart is breaking there;
Oh, the world would be such a kindly world if all men’s hearts lay bare!
We live and share the living lie, we are doing very well,
While they eat our hearts as the years go by, do the things we dare not tell.

We bow us down to a dusty shrine, or a temple in the East,
Or we stand and drink to the world-old creed, with the coffins at the feast;
We fight it down, and we live it down, or we bear it bravely well,
But the best men die of a broken heart for the things they cannot tell.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2012 was ‘Connecting girls, inspiring futures’, and events are held in dozens of countries by businesses, charities and associations in order to raise awareness of this long-held tradition.

I have found this inspirational video online and thought about sharing it with you. Enjoy!

Because I do not hope to turn again

Because I do not hope
Because I do not hope to turn
Desiring this man’s gift and that man’s scope
I no longer strive to strive towards such things
(Why should the aged eagle stretch its wings?)
Why should I mourn
The vanished power of the usual reign?

Because I do not hope to know again
The infirm glory of the positive hour
Because I do not think
Because I know I shall not know
The one veritable transitory power
Because I cannot drink
There, where trees flower, and springs flow, for there is nothing again

Because I know that time is always time
And place is always and only place
And what is actual is actual only for one time
And only for one place
I rejoice that things are as they are and
I renounce the blessed face
And renounce the voice
Because I cannot hope to turn again
Consequently I rejoice, having to construct something
Upon which to rejoice

And pray to God to have mercy upon us
And pray that I may forget
These matters that with myself I too much discuss
Too much explain
Because I do not hope to turn again
Let these words answer
For what is done, not to be done again
May the judgement not be too heavy upon us

Because these wings are no longer wings to fly
But merely vans to beat the air
The air which is now thoroughly small and dry
Smaller and dryer than the will
Teach us to care and not to care
Teach us to sit still.

Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death
Pray for us now and at the hour of our death.

II

Lady, three white leopards sat under a juniper-tree
In the cool of the day, having fed to satiety
On my legs my heart my liver and that which had been contained
In the hollow round of my skull. And God said
Shall these bones live? shall these
Bones live? And that which had been contained
In the bones (which were already dry) said chirping:
Because of the goodness of this Lady
And because of her loveliness, and because
She honours the Virgin in meditation,
We shine with brightness. And I who am here dissembled
Proffer my deeds to oblivion, and my love
To the posterity of the desert and the fruit of the gourd.
It is this which recovers
My guts the strings of my eyes and the indigestible portions
Which the leopards reject. The Lady is withdrawn
In a white gown, to contemplation, in a white gown.
Let the whiteness of bones atone to forgetfulness.
There is no life in them. As I am forgotten
And would be forgotten, so I would forget
Thus devoted, concentrated in purpose. And God said
Prophesy to the wind, to the wind only for only
The wind will listen. And the bones sang chirping
With the burden of the grasshopper, saying

Lady of silences
Calm and distressed
Torn and most whole
Rose of memory
Rose of forgetfulness
Exhausted and life-giving
Worried reposeful
The single Rose
Is now the Garden
Where all loves end
Terminate torment
Of love unsatisfied
The greater torment
Of love satisfied
End of the endless
Journey to no end
Conclusion of all that
Is inconclusible
Speech without word and
Word of no speech
Grace to the Mother
For the Garden
Where all love ends.

Under a juniper-tree the bones sang, scattered and shining
We are glad to be scattered, we did little good to each other,
Under a tree in the cool of the day, with the blessing of sand,
Forgetting themselves and each other, united
In the quiet of the desert. This is the land which ye
Shall divide by lot. And neither division nor unity
Matters. This is the land. We have our inheritance.

III

At the first turning of the second stair
I turned and saw below
The same shape twisted on the banister
Under the vapour in the fetid air
Struggling with the devil of the stairs who wears
The deceitul face of hope and of despair.

At the second turning of the second stair
I left them twisting, turning below;
There were no more faces and the stair was dark,
Damp, jagged, like an old man’s mouth drivelling, beyond repair,
Or the toothed gullet of an aged shark.

At the first turning of the third stair
Was a slotted window bellied like the figs’s fruit
And beyond the hawthorn blossom and a pasture scene
The broadbacked figure drest in blue and green
Enchanted the maytime with an antique flute.
Blown hair is sweet, brown hair over the mouth blown,
Lilac and brown hair;
Distraction, music of the flute, stops and steps of the mind over the third stair,
Fading, fading; strength beyond hope and despair
Climbing the third stair.

Lord, I am not worthy
Lord, I am not worthy
but speak the word only.

IV

Who walked between the violet and the violet
Who walked between
The various ranks of varied green
Going in white and blue, in Mary’s colour,
Talking of trivial things
In ignorance and knowledge of eternal dolour
Who moved among the others as they walked,
Who then made strong the fountains and made fresh the springs

Made cool the dry rock and made firm the sand
In blue of larkspur, blue of Mary’s colour,
Sovegna vos

Here are the years that walk between, bearing
Away the fiddles and the flutes, restoring
One who moves in the time between sleep and waking, wearing

White light folded, sheathing about her, folded.
The new years walk, restoring
Through a bright cloud of tears, the years, restoring
With a new verse the ancient rhyme. Redeem
The time. Redeem
The unread vision in the higher dream
While jewelled unicorns draw by the gilded hearse.

The silent sister veiled in white and blue
Between the yews, behind the garden god,
Whose flute is breathless, bent her head and signed but spoke no word

But the fountain sprang up and the bird sang down
Redeem the time, redeem the dream
The token of the word unheard, unspoken

Till the wind shake a thousand whispers from the yew

And after this our exile

V

If the lost word is lost, if the spent word is spent
If the unheard, unspoken
Word is unspoken, unheard;
Still is the unspoken word, the Word unheard,
The Word without a word, the Word within
The world and for the world;
And the light shone in darkness and
Against the Word the unstilled world still whirled
About the centre of the silent Word.

O my people, what have I done unto thee.

Where shall the word be found, where will the word
Resound? Not here, there is not enough silence
Not on the sea or on the islands, not
On the mainland, in the desert or the rain land,
For those who walk in darkness
Both in the day time and in the night time
The right time and the right place are not here
No place of grace for those who avoid the face
No time to rejoice for those who walk among noise and deny the voice

Will the veiled sister pray for
Those who walk in darkness, who chose thee and oppose thee,
Those who are torn on the horn between season and season, time and time, between
Hour and hour, word and word, power and power, those who wait
In darkness? Will the veiled sister pray
For children at the gate
Who will not go away and cannot pray:
Pray for those who chose and oppose

O my people, what have I done unto thee.

Will the veiled sister between the slender
Yew trees pray for those who offend her
And are terrified and cannot surrender
And affirm before the world and deny between the rocks
In the last desert before the last blue rocks
The desert in the garden the garden in the desert
Of drouth, spitting from the mouth the withered apple-seed.

O my people.

VI

Although I do not hope to turn again
Although I do not hope
Although I do not hope to turn

Wavering between the profit and the loss
In this brief transit where the dreams cross
The dreamcrossed twilight between birth and dying
(Bless me father) though I do not wish to wish these things
From the wide window towards the granite shore
The white sails still fly seaward, seaward flying
Unbroken wings

And the lost heart stiffens and rejoices
In the lost lilac and the lost sea voices
And the weak spirit quickens to rebel
For the bent golden-rod and the lost sea smell
Quickens to recover
The cry of quail and the whirling plover
And the blind eye creates
The empty forms between the ivory gates
And smell renews the salt savour of the sandy earth This is the time of tension between dying and birth The place of solitude where three dreams cross Between blue rocks But when the voices shaken from the yew-tree drift away Let the other yew be shaken and reply.

Blessed sister, holy mother, spirit of the fountain, spirit of the garden,
Suffer us not to mock ourselves with falsehood
Teach us to care and not to care
Teach us to sit still
Even among these rocks,
Our peace in His will
And even among these rocks
Sister, mother
And spirit of the river, spirit of the sea,
Suffer me not to be separated

And let my cry come unto Thee.

Without hanging about I will leave this introduction loose and not expand on it…That, I do in this instance quite deliberately. Do have a read on the post contributed to the blog by Bruce Kilarski. To find out more about him, chick here.

The Lizard and the Golden Fish

A small lizard stood motionless next to a garden pond, his eyes fixed on a swirl in the water below. Beneath the water’s surface glided an exquisitely beautiful fish. Never in this life had he seen anything as lovely; the fishes’ scales gleamed an amazing golden color, her tail and fins were trailing ribbons of delight, and when she swam, she swam as gracefully as a feather wafting through a shaft of sunlight.

“Surely I have never seen anything as beautiful as you. Dear fish, you may think this strange of me, but now that I have seen you, I am sure I have fallen in love with you.”
The fish paused in a graceful turn and replied, “Lizard, you say you love me, but why is that? Is it only because of the way that I look? Have you given any thought to who I am or what I feel? For if you had, you would have found that I am the saddest of all living things.”
“But how can that be?” asked the lizard. “If I had a lifetime to describe how lovely you are I would never find enough words.”
“Many have said they admire me, but none have ever wondered if I am happy here. I have lived in this small pond nearly my whole life, and nowhere else will I live until I die. I would rather be dead than live here. If you love me lizard, will you help me die? Will you drain the water from this pond?”
“How can you ask such a thing from me? How could I ever kill the one that I love? Besides, dear one, I am just a small lizard. I would never be able to remove so much water.”
“Leave me then. Seeing you would only remind me of another hope crushed.”
“I will leave, but only to find a way to set you free, for I love you more than I ever thought I could love.”
“You are only a small lizard. What can you do that will set me free?”
“Yes, I am only a small lizard, but I am the lizard that loves you, and I will find a way.”
And so, the lizard set off to find a way to free his beloved. After thinking for a long time, for lizards think quite slowly indeed, he realized that he would need the help of someone bigger and stronger than himself. And of all the animals he knew, the great buck was by far the strongest. The lizard searched for the buck through the woods and through the meadow. He searched for him by the stream, and from one end of the marsh to the other. When at last he found him, he asked with all of his heart for his help.
“Great buck, if you would only carry a bucket of water from the pond to the stream beyond the woods you would be giving this beautiful fish her freedom. And it is her freedom that she prizes above all other things. It is such a small burden for one so great and strong.”
“That is true. But why should I care about a fish when I am also beautiful? Am I not the most magnificent animal in the woods? I do not care anything about this fish. If you want help, you must find another.”
But the lizard had not given any thought of seeking another’s help. After another long time of great thinking, the lizard thought that if he could find a great bird, surely the bird could carry his precious fish to the stream long before she would be short of breath. The lizard knew that the mother eagle took her meals from the stream by the fallen log, and that is where he found her. Hiding carefully beneath the log, the lizard explained his problem to the mother eagle, and asked for her help.
“You are a brave lizard, but not a wise one, I think. For you must know that I have chicks to feed, and yet you ask me to carry your fish to the stream. I would be happy to carry your fish, but you must know that I would only carry it to my nest where my young ones wait for their meal. If you truly want to free her, you must find another to help you.”
Although the lizard was not clever, he also would not give up. Again he thought a very long time, and slowly he thought of a plan that might work. If he could somehow add more water to the pond, at long last it would overflow, and then his beloved could swim free from her prison. But no matter how much he thought, he could not think of a way to save her once she was free of her pond. Only one person was wise enough to solve this problem, and that was the wise shaman that lived in the small house in the woods. The lizard traveled to the small house of the wise shaman and explained his problem, and asked for advice to set his beloved fish free.
The shaman thought about this for a long while. “What you need is a great flood, but that is a very dangerous thing, and although you may free your fish, you may also harm others. It is also true that no one may be harmed, but are you willing to take such a risk?”
The lizard thought deeply and said, “I love this fish very much, and if it is possible that no one will be harmed, I am willing to take the risk. But how can you cause such a flood?”
“I have the power to make it rain, and only for the sake of love will I do this.”
And so, the shaman chanted what he needed to chant, and he cast spells that needed to be cast. He prayed to many Gods, both large and small, until, just when the lizard thought he could no longer hope, it began to rain. The lizard waited in the tree that hung over the pond for the heavy rains to cause the flood that he desired. And everywhere he looked, water covered the ground. And so, too, the small pond flooded and overflowed allowing the most beautiful of all fish to swim out of the pond to her freedom. She swam with a happiness that was blinding, for she was beautiful, and she was finally free. But the flood was not deep enough, and soon she could swim no more. The lizard saw this and cried out in the deepest anguish, “Swim! My love, swim!!”, but she could not, and it was there that she slowly died. And so the lizard, seeing this, let go of the branch he sat upon and fell into the pond, for that was the only way that he could free himself of his ! despair.

It was Valentine’s day yesterday and ‘love was in the air’. Well to be fair, love is ‘in the skies’ most of the time for me as I am not that great in that department. Oh, hell yes I do love! and I love my wife, my friends and many other things. I even consider myself a romantic, but in all honesty I think we tend to delute so many things in life that I must be careful and refrain from any bold statements! Surely, there are way too many around meaning nothing;(

Anyway, I thought of keeping this post short and sweet! l’ve watched a bunch of romantic movies in my time which had some great love quotes in it. Here is a short list on the Love themes I’ve collected. Some of these quotes represent dialogues that have stirred some ripples in one small heart. And love…being a many splendid thing, embraces all kinds of human relationships, and transcends cultures and boundaries.
